Meet Carine Dagossy, event coordinator for the African Princes of Comedy (APC), an established African comedy event that goes from city to city featuring young African comedians. These events are nothing new on a global scale, however, it will be the first of its kind in Canada. What better place to hold it than in the Win City? We sat down with Carine to chat about the upcoming event and what to expect.
Tell us about the event.
The African Princes of Comedy is Windsor’s very first African Themed Comedy Show. It will be held on Friday, September 15th at the Caboto club. The comedy show will feature a line of known comedians from Africa like Aphrican Ape, Cheif Obi, E-baby Kobby and Wowo Boyz. We will also feature known public figures from the GTA like Femi Lawson, Lick My Fashion aka Jalen, and Delilah Johnson. We’ve also decided to feature local Windsor artists, comedians and musicians to make the line a little more colourful. This event is a new way to bring a wide range of diversity to the Windsor/ Essex community.
How was the event conceived? Who thought of it and where did the idea come from?
The original idea of this event came from the head coordinator Mayowa Balogun, who realized that there was a lack of event diversity and representation of Black people and Africans in the Windsor/ Essex area. After doing research some research he realized that laughter brings a community together and decided that a comedy show would be a unique way to bring the people of Windsor together.
What uniquely distinguishes Africain Comedy as a genre?
What uniquely distinguishes African Comedy from the rest, is the culture itself. What we (Africans) consider to be normal compared to those living in other countries. Our jokes about how we were raised, the analogies we think of when cursing someone or even the way we show affection and love to someone we care for distinguishes us from other genres.
What’s the biggest thing we can expect by attending?
Because this event is extremely different from all the other events Windsor has ever had, there are many things people can expect by attending. Not only will people have the opportunity to try African food from different countries, but the amazing decoration and details that have been put into this event. Our line of comedians and public figures are obviously the main reason why people should be buying their tickets, but also our red carpet for those who love fashion. People can also expect to see their favourite local stores vending their clothes, food or services.
What’s your favourite joke?
“Why did the Nigerian Mom faint? She found out that her son wanted to become a comedian.”
*Nigerian mom: “My Son wants to be clown.*
Anything else you’d like to add?
We want you to emphasize the uniqueness of this event. No one has ever done a comedy show as big as we want to have. Our comedians may not be any Kevin Hart, but a line of talent and inserts we have to follow behind them can never be compared.
