Celebrate CJAM’s 35 years of campus and community radio with the new documentary screening, Smashing All Preconceived Notions. The documentary covers the great local history of CJAM 99.1FM, including stories of famous broadcaster Joe Bowen, and the station’s obsessed caller.
“Windsor and Detroit are historic radio cities, and CJAM FM has carved out its own space in that history as the true voice of the underground. Throughout it’s thirty-five years on FM, all volunteers and staff members at CJAM have had their voices unified, regardless of viewpoint or music taste, to represent the community. It’s never been like anything else on the dial and it never will be. Smashing All Preconceived Notions reveals not only the history behind the microphone but how it has affected the lives of volunteers and listeners alike,” shares Brady Holek, Station Manager at CJAM.
Brittany Webster, the creator of the documentary, spent eight months working on the project. Webster graduated from Digital Journalism and English Language and Literature in June 2018. She began a career with Bell Media in Prince Rupert, BC mid October. She completed the documentary on her own, originally for a class project. The documentary also features background music by local artist Johnny West. “Smashing All Preconceived Notions is the perfect title because nobody ever thought CJAM would make it. For years, the university pushed against the station and threatened to shut the station down or stop funding, but we never gave up. CJAM is one of my favourite pieces of Windsor and it gave me the confidence and skills to work in broadcast media,” says Webster.
Join CJAM at the Green Bean Café on Thursday, November 8th for the premier of Smashing All Preconceived Notions. Doors open at 7pm and merchandise will also be available for purchase at the screening, including copies of the documentary itself. Although the event is free of charge, donations are greatly appreciated to contribute to the functionality and future of CJAM FM. Can’t make the event but would still like to donate?
